A friend of mine whom I work with often uses the phrase "FUD." While he certainly didn’t coin the phrase, a lot of people do suffer from Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. Recently, I accidently changed the wrong person’s password (oop, my fault there – a typo between an e and an a) but the ensuing FUD was astounding. That user ended up blaming me for desktop shortcuts on her desktop that no longer worked (they were linked to files on her zip disk that wasn’t in the drive), and a file SHE misplaced (I later found it elsewhere on her drive.) An accidental changing of a password can not cause these two problems, but because of FUD – and lack of basic computer knowledge – it was my fault. Fight FUD: don’t jump to conclusions and try think rationally.
